The City of Rocky River is issuing an advisory for the Yacht Club basin over the next 5 days. Extreme cold temperatures have created thick ice and rain is in the forecast to begin over the weekend. Rapidly rising temperatures and rain flowing down stream in the river may create flooding conditions.
The City urges you to prepare your home and consider arrangements for your household. Due to the unpredictable circumstances regarding the river, if you notice high water in the river you must make the critical, personal decision to quickly leave your residence. Do not wait to be evacuated. Tips to consider in the event that you evacuate your home are:
- Plan where to go before potential evacuation;
- Pack important insurance paperwork, photographs and items of value, phone charger, etc. for easy removal from your home and include medications in an overnight bag;
- Make a point to unplug electronics, move items off the floor and turn the power off to your home before evacuating if outdoor temperatures allow.
It is important to remember that footing can be undermined in only 6 inches of moving water. The river water will rise quickly; if you notice high water please do not wait to be evacuated. Our safety forces are on alert to watch and assist; however, do not wait to be evacuated.
If evacuations become necessary, once you leave you may not return to your home due to potential dangerous river conditions. Therefore, please be prepared. If you have any concerns about evacuating (mobility issues or concerns about relocating) please contact Mary Kay Costello, Director of Public Safety Service at 440-331-0600. If you need to contact the City after business hours in this regard, please call the non-emergency line at the Rocky River Police Department: 440-331-1234 (extension 0).
